Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan
Let’s face it, you don’t go to Kyrgyzstan for Bishkek. In the capital, you are far from the majestic vistas and impressive mountain landscapes of the rest of the country. Bishkek, also known as Frunze, looks like a Soviet city. For example, tall concrete buildings are reminiscent of gray officials and Kafkaesque bureaucracy. Plus a prominent statue of Lenin (in front of the National History Museum, worth a visit).
But we digress. Kyrgyzstan’s capital also feels a bit like a provincial city, with wide boulevards and green parks. So actually quite green. Two rivers flow, the Ala Archa and the Alamüdün. Along one side you can see the mountains of Ala Archa rising; on the other, the vast steppe stretches into Kazakhstan.
Points Of Interest:
- The Osh Bazaar: This bustling market offers a nice first look at central Asian culture. Indulge in the sweet sounds of roaring vendors and quivering buyers.
- Ala Too square: the city’s large central square is guarded by a statue of Manas, Kyrgyzstan’s legendary national hero.
- Panfilov Park: this park is a good example again of how people in Kyrgyzstan treat leisure time. There are several attractions to visit here.
- Victory Square: a park with 3 large arches in the middle. Under the arches eternal fire burns to celebrate 40 years since the war ended.
Bishkek is a relatively young city, and as a consequence has few historic buildings.
Bishkek as a fallback base
The capital is primarily the country’s departure and entrance hall. Many tourists rest there after a long trip or just recover from their long journey. You can eat and drink well there. The town is also a great starting point for trekking and skiing tours. Ala Archa national park – with several mountain peaks higher than 4000 m – is just 40 km away.
