China

China is a land of extremes: densely populated and super modern in the east, vast and rugged in the west. From Buddhist temples to Islamic minarets. In the south, you can relax on the tropical beaches of Hainan, while in the north you’ll find deep snow. Each region tells its own story – ancient, diverse, and full of surprises.

Land of a thousand faces: ancient traditions and modern metropolises

Introduction & Practical Information

China is a world of its own, where every landscape and every culture tells a different story. In the densely populated east, you’ll find iconic landmarks such as the Forbidden City in Beijing, futuristic Shanghai, and the imperial gardens of Suzhou. Travel west and an entirely different world unfolds: barren plateaus, nomadic tents, and remote valleys. China amazes, fascinates, and overwhelms with its immense wealth of nature, culture, and history.

China is not a destination you can capture in a single sentence: it is a world of contrasts, where ancient traditions and modern innovation go hand in hand. I will take you to hidden teahouses, centuries-old villages, colorful markets, and impressive landscapes you’ll never forget. Whether you dream of walking among rice terraces, wandering through imperial palaces, or tasting authentic street food – I’ll make sure you truly experience China.

History in short

A Journey of a Thousand Miles Begins with a Single Step

China’s history spans more than 3,000 years, with dynasties such as the Han and Tang making major cultural and technological contributions. After centuries of imperial rule and foreign influence, the People’s Republic of China was established in 1949. Since the economic reforms of the 1980s, the country has grown into a global superpower. Today, futuristic metropolises stand side by side with ancient temples and traditions. The famous saying by Laozi — “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” — perfectly captures China’s path from empire to world power. Modern China is a fascinating blend of old and new, tradition and future.

Population China

Population

1.4 billion people, rapidly urbanizing

China’s population, with more than 1.4 billion people, is the second largest in the world and has a rich ethnic diversity. Although about 90% of the population is etnic Han Chinese, there are 55 officially recognized minorities, such as the Tibetans, Uyghurs, Zhuang and Hui. Each group has its own language, customs and religion, creating a cultural mosaic within one country. Population growth has been strongly influenced over the past decades by government policies such as the one-child policy, which has since been abandoned. Due to massive urbanization, millions of people have moved from rural areas to cities, causing China’s cities to grow at a rapid pace.

Geography China

Geography & Climate

Diversity: from tropical beaches to snow-capped peaks

China is geographically vast and incredibly diverse, with landscapes ranging from tropical beaches to icy mountains. In the south, you’ll find a humid subtropical climate with rice fields, karst mountains, and warm coastlines such as Hainan. The east is fertile and densely populated, dominated by the Yangtze and Yellow Rivers — the backbone of Chinese agriculture. Head west, and the scenery changes dramatically: dry deserts, high plateaus, and mighty ranges like the Himalayas and the Tianshan Mountains. In the north, the endless steppes of Inner Mongolia face bitterly cold winters. This geographic variety gives China one of the broadest climate ranges in the world — from tropical to arctic.

Tourism

Enormous potential, growing international appeal

Tourism in China was long dominated by domestic travelers, with hundreds of millions of Chinese exploring their own regions. But since visa rules were eased in 2024 — allowing citizens from many European countries to stay 30 days visa-free — international tourism has surged. Millions of visitors are once again discovering cities like Shanghai, Beijing, and Xi’an. China is heavily investing in tourism infrastructure, making mobile payments more accessible for foreigners, and promoting travel beyond the major cities. Thanks to its vast cultural and geographical diversity, there’s something for every traveler: from imperial palaces to futuristic skylines, from serene mountain temples to bustling food markets.
