The land of the carpathians and Dracula

Introduction & Practical Information

Romania is the Latin soul among its Slavic neighbors. As the only country in Eastern Europe where a Romance language is spoken, its population reflects a blend of East and West. Romania has a turbulent history, but since the fall of the socialist Ceaușescu regime, the country has spread its wings. Today, Romania increasingly positions itself as an adventurous hotspot. The rugged Carpathians, crystal-clear glacial lakes, and Dracula’s Castle are just a few of its highlights.

“Romania goes beyond the clichés: rugged and pure. It is also warm, culturally rich, and full of adventure. What makes me most proud are our mountains. In the Carpathians, you can hike, ski, mountain bike, and spot wildlife across a variety of landscapes. Our cities also have centuries of history. Of course, most tourists know our chaotic capital, Bucharest. But I’m in love with the smaller cities — Sibiu, Brasov, Iasi, and Timisoara.”

History

From occupation to a free and proud Romania

At first, you might think that Dracula played a major role in Romania’s history. However, the country has a long history of wealth and struggle. The Romans conquered Dacia, after which the region was ruled for centuries by various powers, from Hungarians to Ottomans. In the 19th century, the historic regions of Wallachia and Moldavia united to form modern Romania. 20th-century communism under Nicolae Ceaușescu left a heavy mark on society and architecture, but the fall of the regime in 1989 ushered in a new era of freedom and renewal.

Population

People and traditions

Romania has around 19 million inhabitants, including Romanians, Hungarians, Roma, and other ethnic groups. The population is warm and hospitable; it is common to be offered a cup of țuică or a plate of sarmale. In urban areas like Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, and Brașov, you’ll notice Romania’s vibrant, modern side, while villages in the Carpathians preserve centuries-old traditions. Religion plays an important role: the majority are Orthodox, but Catholic and Protestant communities are also visible, especially in Transylvania.
