Silk Road Resort, Jikepulin & Altay City – modern skiing with soul
Just outside Ürümqi lies the Silk Road Ski Resort, one of China’s first modern ski areas. Here, you ski literally on the edge of the desert — a stunning contrast of sand and snow. The short, steep runs are perfect for your first taste of Chinese skiing, with Uyghur kebabs and hand-pulled noodles waiting between your runs. Further north lies Altay City, where the General’s Mountain resort towers over town. By day, you carve turns above the steppe; by night, you ski under starlit skies. In the wooden village of Hemu, the massive Jikepulin Resort offers over 70 km of slopes, gondolas up to 2,779 meters, and snow so perfect it’s now part of the Freeride World Tour — all without the crowds.
Uzirik Snow Park – freeride heaven
About two hours from Altay, Uzirik Snow Park is pure backcountry bliss. No lifts, no noise — just mountains, powder, and silence. A snowcat takes you up, and with local guides, you drop into wide bowls, steep couloirs, and endless fresh lines. Every run is different, every descent a new discovery. Civilization feels far away — and that’s exactly the magic of it.
Back to the roots – the birthplace of skiing
While most think of China as new to the ski scene, the truth is quite the opposite. In the Altay region, rock carvings of hunters on skis date back 10,000 years — the oldest evidence of skiing on Earth. Local craftsmen still make wooden skis with fur bases, just like their ancestors did.
