Camper & Ski Slovenia
Wake up! Early in the morning the windows are still frozen. The warm blankets will make you rebel. Your buddy opens the camper door. Drifting snow swirls in. The sun carefully breaks through the clouds. You see the mighty peaks on the other side of the lake. Get dressed quickly. The other skiers are already in front of their camper with a cup of coffee. The ski lifts aren’t running yet, but we can’t wait. Everyone is enthusiastic. This is what you came for. YEAH!
This winter we are going to make an amazing camper road trip through the Julian Alps. With your (rented) camper we visit the highlights of Slovenia. Of course in the traditional Ryce Travel style. You sleep in breathtaking places, you ski on secret slopes and you meet the over-friendly Slovenes. All this with start and finish in the capital Ljubljana.
Traveling by camper is safe and corona-proof. You create your own bubble and if necessary we keep a distance of 1.5 meters. Let’s hope we don’t have to cancel, but if so, you will get a 100% refund of the (down) payment
Slovenia’s surprising capital has everything to warm your heart. The most important places of the city are along the Ljubljanica river. Cozy terraces are set out in front of unique baroque buildings. Ljubljana’s medieval castle towers directly above the old town. From here you have a lovely view of Slovenia. The Julian Alps loom in the distance. We therefore continue our way quickly. We will be back in Ljubljana in a week. First to the mountains
The most challenging slopes are located in Slovenia’s highest ski area. The Kanin mountain (2587m) is the center of the Kanin / Selle Nevea ski area. It is right on the border of Slovenia and Italy. There is a kilometer long red run to the village of Selle Nevea (1140m) in Italy. Most freeride options, however, are on the Slovenian side. With an experienced guide you can explore the most beautiful routes. We sleep in the extreme sports town of Bovec. We have booked 2/3 person rooms in a local guesthouse. So take a nice shower after skiing
On the morning of the second day in Kanin we continue our way spectacularly. First we drive along the Soca river and then dozens of hairpins lead us over the Predil pass. The camper vans will be tested seriously. At the end of the descent we are in Italy and we arrive at the beautiful Predil lake. This is where we pitch our camps. This is an amazing camping spot with great views. We are allowed to free camp by the clear blue lake. All around you are gigantic mountain peaks. We are going to make descents on the Italian side. At the end of the ski day we return to the campers. We prepare our own meal. Then warm up by the campfire and the daredevils can take a dip in the ice-cold lake. We assure you that you will sleep well
After a nutritious breakfast we drive back to Slovenia. We do a game of curling in the famous mountain village of Kranjska Gora. Boules on ice is an insult to this Olympic Sport. With supervision of an expert you will discover what it is. Then you sit down for a well-deserved lunch at the amazing Jasna lake. From here you have a view of the tallest mountain of Slovenia. The mighty Triglav has a top of 2864 meters.
The Vogel ski area has the most options for freeriders. It is wonderfully quiet and the new chairlifts take you to steep northern faced slopes. You have parked the camper at Lake Bohinj. In good snow conditions we can ski/board all the way back to the parking lot. Furthermore, Vogel has the largest fun park in Slovenia and not unimportantly: the most snowfall in Slovenia.
We sleep in a mountain hut at 2000 meters. That means first tracks every morning. You will be well taken care of in the refuge. You get a hearty breakfast and a local dinner. So you only have to worry about skiing. We show the best descents and enjoy a charming rest after the lifts close. This is really unwinding.
Sunset sauna experience
After the second day of skiing, we return to the campers early. We have booked a sunset sauna experience. That means that we will relax in the Sava wellness center. The sun sets with your feet in the pool. You have a view over Lake Bled. It is cozy and warm inside. Especially when you take the full sauna experience. When your stomach starts to growl, we get out of the water and eat something on the way to the camping spot.
Introduction ski touring / splitboarding
After the sauna experience we drive to the Ljubelj pass (1367m). This mountain pass crosses the border into Austria. We just stay on the Slovenian side and park the campers at the foot of the Zelenica mountain. We prepare for another night of free camping. Early in the morning the ski touring guides will be waiting for us. They explain the basics and then we slowly ascend to the top of the Zelenica. If all goes well, everyone can handle this level. At the top you can literally see Slovenia at your feet. Behind you is Austria, in front of you start the Balkans. We are getting ready for the last descent of the week. Fresh snow crunches under your bindings. One more time that adrenaline rush. And then we come back to the camper.
