Voices from the past
The oldest inhabited place in all of the country. Uplistsikhe (უფლისციხე) is a rock-cut settlement whose first traces date back to the Iron Age. Remarkable is the combination of different styles and techniques: archaeologists feast on the mix of Anatolian, Iranian, Christian and pagan elements. The area extends for approximately 8 hectares and is open to visitors . Clamber through the ancient tunnels and pause for a moment in the basilica carved out of rock in days gone by.
Uplistsikhe is much closer to Tbilisi than the bigger cave city of Vardzia. It can be easily visited on a day trip from the capital. The city of Gori is only 10km away. The road follows the Mtkvari river and it’s lovely to drive around the region.
